Dhela Safari Zone
  • Jim Corbett National Park

    Good for Spotting Wildlife

    First Eco-tourism Zone

The Dhela Safari Zone is one of the prime safari zones in Jim Corbett National Park, located in the southern part of the park. Though it is a relatively newer zone compared to the more famous Dhikala or Jhirna zones, it has quickly gained popularity due to its accessibility, rich biodiversity, and stunning landscapes. Here’s a complete overview of the Dhela Safari Zone.

    Location

The Dhela Safari Zone is situated on the southern edge of Jim Corbett National Park, close to the Ramnagar town in Uttarakhand. It is located about 25 km from Ramnagar and is easily accessible by road.
The zone lies in the Corbett Tiger Reserve, which covers a vast area and is home to various wildlife species, offering a chance to explore diverse terrain.

    Landscape & Vegetation

The Dhela zone is known for its mild terrain, which combines sal forests, grasslands, and riverine areas. The landscape offers a blend of dense sal trees, shisham, and teak forests, as well as open meadows and riverbanks.
The Dhela River, which passes through the zone, adds a picturesque quality to the safari, with the riverbanks offering a habitat for various species of wildlife, especially near waterholes.
The lush vegetation and diverse topography create a beautiful setting for safaris, providing ample opportunities to spot wildlife.

    Wildlife

Dhela Zone is rich in wildlife and offers a great chance of spotting a variety of animals. Some of the prominent species include :

Bengal Tigers : Though sightings can be rare, the zone is known for the presence of tigers, and lucky visitors may spot one, especially during early morning or late evening safaris.

Leopards : Leopards are often spotted in the region, and they are known to prefer the dense forest areas.

Elephants : You may encounter Asian elephants in the grasslands or near the riverbanks.

Deer species : The zone is home to different kinds of deer, including Chital (spotted deer), Sambar, Muntjac (barking deer), and Nilgai (blue bull).

Wild Boar, Jackals, Sloth Bears, and Hyenas are also common in the Dhela zone.

Birdlife : The zone offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, with species like eagles, hornbills, woodpeckers, and kingfishers commonly seen.

Reptiles like monitor lizards, cobras, and tortoises can also be found in the area.

    Safari Experience

    • The primary way to explore the Dhela Zone is via jeep safaris. These safaris allow visitors to navigate the forest tracks, riverbanks, and grasslands, providing a close-up look at the area’s wildlife.
    • Morning safaris typically run from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM, while evening safaris are conducted from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The morning safaris are the best time for spotting wildlife, as animals are more active and easier to spot during the cooler hours.
    • Canter safaris are also available, but the jeep safari is preferred due to the zone’s varied terrain.
    • The safari journey takes you through lush forests, grasslands, and waterholes, with a knowledgeable guide pointing out animals and explaining the natural history of the area.

    Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Dhela Safari Zone is from November to June, with the peak season being from March to June. During these months, the weather is warm, and wildlife congregates near water sources, making them easier to spot.
The winter months (November to February) offer a more pleasant climate for safaris, although the chances of spotting animals might be lower as they are more spread out across the park.
The monsoon season (July to October) is the off-season, as heavy rains make it difficult to navigate the trails, and the park remains closed for safaris.

    Entry & Permits

    • To visit the Dhela Safari Zone, you need to obtain a permit, which can be booked online through the official Jim Corbett booking portal or directly from the Forest Department in Ramnagar.
    • There is a limited number of vehicles allowed in the zone each day, so it’s recommended to book your safari in advance, especially during peak season.

    Activities

Birdwatching : Dhela is a fantastic spot for bird enthusiasts, as it is home to several species of resident and migratory birds.

Wildlife Photography : With its beautiful landscapes and abundant wildlife, Dhela offers excellent opportunities for photography. The golden hours of early morning and evening offer the best lighting for capturing animals in their natural habitat.

Nature Walks : Though not as common as jeep safaris, guided nature walks are occasionally available for visitors interested in learning more about the park's flora, fauna, and ecological balance.
